Events & Upcoming Classes beginning Feb. 2016

It’s been a busy few months since Nov. 2015.

The filming of Quilting Arts TV is now showing on PBS in my area.  The episodes I will be featured in are 1709 and 1712.  I don’t know an exact date of the showing, but it should be sometime in March 2016.  I have the DVD’s for sale of all the shows if you might be interested!  There are some amazing artist in each episode of the 4 DVD’s.

Houston was really fun & I have never walked so much in one day as I did there!  As they say, “everything is bigger in Texas”!  I taught three mini classes and did demo’s at Open Studio on the show floor.  Every minute was fun and I got to see many of my friends that live all over the country!  I was really surprised when Joanne Sharpe came to take one of my classes!  She is a great artist and teacher!!!  She has online lettering/art classes, which I have taken and enjoyed every step!  Jane LaFazio also came by to chat one afternoon.  Her painting classes online are also really great!  If you like to paint and draw these two artists are great to learn from.

Christmas was really fun this year with little Cash!  He will be two in March and just so much fun to hang out with!  He came to visit one day before Christmas and we made cookies as I remember doing with my grandmother many years ago…. Sweet memories!  Of course we only got about 10 cookies made, but it was fun!

January was a blur with family birthdays and three shows!  Tim turned 60 (how did that happen so fast???)!  And Brandon turned 32…. dang and I’m next!  Yikes!

The Myrtle Beach Quilt Party was just as much fun as always!  Great Students and great friendships!  My only regret is I missed being snowed in at home that weekend!  🙂  I LOVE snow!  and today it was supposed to snow, but not a flake yet… dang it!

Feburary has started out to be so sweet…  Well it is the month of love you know!  Tim got me roses for Valentine’s Day and I love them and him!  Our Anniversary is the 28th and we will have been married for 38 years!  Wow!  Not sure where all those years went, but it happens.

Here are the classes I have scheduled as of to date, more will be listed as they are scheduled:

Just Back From Quilting Arts TV Taping!

I can hardly believe how fast time flies when you are busy.  Last week this time I was planning, packing and running around getting everything together for a few days in Cleveland, OH.  All of that seems like yesterday or a month ago!  I left early on Tue. morning to fly to Cleveland, arrived there around lunchtime.  Then took an Uber Cab (fabulous experience for travel, BTW) and headed to KS Productions for a very different experience.  Once I arrived I was greeted by the staff of KS Productions and the QA staff!  They were all so very nice and so helpful!

The experience was very positive!  I am finally recovered from being mentally and physically exhausted!  Most of that was from the unknown expectations and travel.  My weekend consisted of a motorcycle ride with Tim on Fri. and baby sitting little Cash, (not at the same time) taught a Wool Embroidery class on Sat. morning at the Cabarrus Art Guild, and a fun day with my daughter-in-law Samantha on Sun.  Much needed time with family always makes me feel rested!  Now it’s time to get back to what I do!

Here are some pics of last weeks events!  Made lots of new friends I hope to be able to keep in touch with across the US!  Vivika and Lisa Chin seemed to really enjoy my prayer flags!  I was so delighted by their enthusiasm….. I never expect to have such positive feedback from my work, I just make art from my heart and from things that really mean something to me.  If others love what I do, it is truely just a bonus that feeds my soul…..Love you all!  Susan

Exciting Events for Fall 2015!!!!!

A few months ago I was asked to be on Quilting Arts TV with Susan Brubaker Knapp as the host of the show!  I was thrilled to even be considered, let alone have it all happen!  So now all the contracts are signed and tickets bought, and in September I will be filming three, yes three segments for Quilting Arts!  There will be magazine articles to follow each of the episodes I will be featured in.  Each episode will be techniques I use for embellishing, such as Free-Motion Embroidery, Three Dimensional Embroidery, and Paint Dying Batting, lace, fabric and whatever I can find to paint!!!  It’s going to be tons of fun, but I have lots to prepare.  Already went clothes shopping so now I have something to wear…. like I didn’t have anything before!  Ha!  But you know a girl has to have a new outfit or 12!

I have recently added new classes at Quilter’s Loft in Mooresville, NC and at Random Arts in Saluda, NC.  Both of these shops are wonderful!  And they do such a nice job of promoting and filling my classes.  Thank you Erica & Jane!  The pics below are from the Prayer Flag class I taught at Random Arts in Saluda last week.

Another event sort of fell into my lap a month or so ago too…. it was funny Kristin of Fiber On A Whim sent me a message one day and said she had an idea… well it was to help her and Jan her mom do QuiltFest in Houston!  They finally decided they just could not do it all!  Don’t we all have they news flash every so often???  As hard as we try, sometimes we just need help!  So I’m off to Houston the end of Oct. to help in their very creative booth and to do mini Make-n-Takes using their fabrics, trims and threads they dye.  I just don’t know how they do it all as it is…love their amazing work!  We are going to have a great time!  They too will be guest on the Quilting Arts TV filming the same week I will be there.  We’ll have lots to talk about over a beer or two… oh maybe a few more than that!  🙂  Here is a little sample of the mini classes in Houston.  And yes I may have to simplify it just a bit, but this is the idea using their hand dyed Osnaburg, Cheesecloth, Rayon Ribbons and Pearl Cotton Threads.

Busy Summer!

I told you I would not overload your inbox with updates, but I did intend on a few more post than I have had time to make….I’ve had many classes across the state.  I am currently teaching at Quilters Loft in Mooresville, Sew Original in Winston Salem and Boone, Sew Much Fun! in Gastonia, Studio Stitch in Greensboro, Random Arts in Saluda, NC, and Lenoir, NC.  Last weekend I had a booth at the Columbia Quilting Expo hosted by the Quilters Gallery.  It was a great show even though is was so dang hot there!  I actually thought I was going to melt on Thursday when we were setting up.  Funny little saying one lady told me on Saturday, “Columbia was built over Hell, with nothing but a screen door in between”…. that was just too funny, but on Thursday I would have agreed with her!

I will be making a new post soon for all the classes and workshops I will be offering for the next quarter.  So stay tuned for more to come soon!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay cool!

Susan

Spring has sprung at John C. Campbell Folk School!

Last week I was teaching at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC.  What an inspiring place to be…. the people, nature, mountains, weather, birds, flowers, food, music, I could go on and on about this little bit of heaven!  Kristi Steiner & I taught our Field Guide to Creativity with 7 beaiutiful women.  Each and every one brought a different spark to the experience!  It is such a nice break to be unplugged from all the daily demands and task we all have to do. IMG_0325 IMG_0321IMG_0342 IMG_0351 IMG_0334 IMG_0356

When leaving the folk school on Saturday morning, I could see the fog roll in across the valley as I was loading up… when driving away from the school the mist, dew, sunrise, and fog change everything you see!  It’s amazing how different everything looks with a little added embellishing.  The grasses look like they are dotted with glass beads…. the rock walls with a hint of water running down them look like mirrors of glass…. the valleys look like they are covered with huge cotton balls…. it is truely magical!  I hope I can help others see a little magic in everything that is there for us.  Artist have the ability to see these things so clearly because they atune to the details of everything in the world.  Everyone has this ability, but they just don’t always use it.

IMG_6186 IMG_6143 IMG_6113 IMG_6121 IMG_6226 IMG_6230 IMG_6247

I will be back at the Folk School in May to teach my “Flower Doodles” for a long weekend class.  Join me if you can!  I can’t think of a better place to teach this watercolor on fabric with machine quilted details class.IMG_4039

I will be spending the weekend again with some of my like minded artist friends and can’t wait!  We will be in the mountains again, so I am hoping to see more magic as we explore Little Switzerland, Marion, Spruce Pines, and Penland.

This week I will beginning my newest BOM class at Judy Lea’s Quilt Studio in Concord, NC called “Nature’s Treasures”.  I have so many ideas I think my head might pop and all the little prizes spill out!  The first few months of the class will be making a prayer flag or garland type project.  I’ve always heard of prayer flags, but really didn’t understand what they meant. Quilting Arts has published a new e-book on prayer flags, simple ones and very elaborate ones as well.  They were hung just inside doors of homes to bless those who entered as they fluttered in the breeze.  So after reading the book I love the idea of prayer flags.  We all need to be blessed with goodness.  Each one of my little flags will have tiny words of inspiration and blessings to the viewer.

Other projects will include a wall piece with 3-dimensional works to create “Natures Cradles”.  Just wait til you see what I am working on for these little gems!  As I noted the mountains were very inspiring to add more meaning to this sweet project.

Classes:

“Field Guide to Creativity”

Kristin Steiner and I created this amazing creativity workshop for our retreats we hosted in Blowing Rock for 6 years. We now teach this one at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. It is all based on the season’s of the year and how it relates to your creativity. Each season is different, from Spring with new ideas and new beginnings to Winter where you may be dormant to re-energize your creativity.  Join us for a week of creative fun in the beautiful NC mountains!

“Once Upon A Time” (Fabric Books)

These little fabric books are so much fun to make! Susan will guide you through the steps of doing fabric collage pages using machine & hand techniques. There will be tons of embellishing techniques covered, different ways to use photo transfers & rubber stamped images as well. The theme for your book can be based around a favorite fabric or a photo. Anything can be your theme, such as family, nature, or a pet. If you don’t have a theme, Susan will help you come up with an idea! Vintage linens, laces, and buttons are always an added treasure for your book! Susan has just been published in Quilting Arts Magazine with one of her fabric books & wall hangings, using paint dyed batting. She will have the supplies for you to paint dye some for your little book or if you like you could make a wall hanging instead. Her newest piece will be a little banner/prayer flag idea, this would be another option. There will be many hand embroidery techniques covered in this class too! So if you love to embellish this is the class for you to learn some new tricks!

“Nature’s Treasures”

This is my newest class I am designing as a BOM and sort of a year long retreat! I am in love with the projects I have designed and I hope you will be too!!! First we are going to make a very creative “swag”, “garland” or “prayer flag”, I am still not quite sure what to call it… any ideas??? It will be a wall piece that could be hung over a window, above another piece of art or best of all over a bed. There will be very little machine work on this piece, but tons of embellishing by hand! Secondly we will make either a wall piece with 3-D parts and lots of texture. The other part of the class will be a fabric book to be housed in a cigar box. We are going to be using many creative ideas, so feel free to change or add any of your own ideas. I have always found when working on my art if I discuss it with others I come up with even more ideas. Each month I will have instructions for the technique we are going to cover. Also my plan is to have a little something for you to use on your project each month as well (hopefully I can find enough for everyone in the class). You will still need to bring your own “parts” for the projects and I will have a supply list each month for the next month. ***If in class one there are more people than the classroom can handle we will add another class to accommodate the size.

“Nature’s Treasures”

“Purse-onality”

There has been a lot of interest over my machine quilting, especially the script I have been doing on many of my quilts. I have to say it is one of my favorite things to do! I used to really stress over the quilting part, but now I can’t wait to get to that part. Maybe that is why I have been designing more simple, even almost whole cloth type quilts. It is really much easier than you may think. This class was the result of my many, many, many small samples I have done in classes. So I came up with a use for some of the larger samples I have made. A PURSE!!! The purse/tote could be a fashion statement or maybe use it to carry your rulers and small matt to a class. Whatever it’s purpose, it is just fun to make! But most of all your machine quilting skills will benefit from the experience! If for any reason you do not want to make the purse you could just make the quilt sandwiches will all the same machine quilting techniques we will be doing in class.

“Glory In the Morning” or “Spring Mornings” Quilt

With simple background piecing, this is a really fun quilt to make! First we will piece the background in a somewhat neutral or monochromatic color palette, then we will fuse the applique pieces. Spring Mornings was done using a Sizzix Die Cut machine, and I will have mine to use in class. Glory in the Morning was done in more of a traditional fused applique technique. Both designs were “Appli-Quilted”, which means the applique is done free-motion when the quilt is machine quilted. Very fun and quick!

“Mountain Moon”

Are you afraid of curved piecing??? Ok, we are going to machine applique these circles onto a background instead! It’s very simple to create with my technique on “faux hand applique” stitches on your machine. I have many other tips to make this quilt fun and easy to create. I used a collection of Marcia Derse fabrics for one quilt and the other I used all text fabric for backgrounds and Kaffe Fassett for the circles. They both are very bright and cheerful quilts. The binding is a unique use of all the leftovers since this quilt does not have a border. There is a colorful button used on each of the corners of the blocks to add just a little bit of whimsy!

“Twigs & Tweets”

Love birds??? This BOM is from my book “Twigs & Tweets”. They are little wool squares appliqued to a cotton background using many hand embroidery stitches. There are also 14 other projects in my book to play with, such as journal covers, block keeper, pincushions, sewing kits, and more. Join me for a fun stitching experience!

“Machine Quilting!”

This is one of my most popular classes! Learn the basics of machine quilting from tricks and tips I have learned over the years. I will help you with any and all problems you might be having…. I have probably already had the same ones over the years. I have very specific brands of batting and threads I recommend. That is half the battle right there! Join me for a relaxed day of quilting! And yes, I said relaxed!

“Flower Doodles”

Let’s play with Wax Pastels & Inktense Pencils! While we create a water color painting on fabric. This is a very easy, fun way to paint on fabric. As a bonus you will perfect your machine quilting skills & create a beautiful little quilted wall hanging. Don’t worry about having to know how to draw, Susan will have a pattern you can trace to make this a really easy process, and yes you can be an artist! Along with drawing & simple painting there will be lots of focus on color. Of course there will be lots of embellishing techniques for a perfect piece! We will be doing some free-motion embroidery, beading, hand embroidery and some unique applique techniques. The finish will be done with the wacky log cabin piecing for a fun border, and several unique binding techniques to choose from. You can’t make just one!!!

“Artful Postcards”

These little pieces of art are quite unique! There is a bit of painting for a background, a bit of hand embroidery & then embellish with beads, yarn and trims to your hearts desire! You do not have to know anything about quilting for this class, you just have to enjoy the art of stitching & beading! You can’t make just one! After the stitching is done they are attached to a hand dyed piece of burlap for a rustic edge. These little gems are not necessarily intended for mailing, they are just postcard size pieces of art!

“Lil’ Critters”:

These cute little quilts were designed for children to enjoy for many years to come!  Prince Froggy was made especially for my sweet grandson… Rabbit, Rabbit was just a fun one, since I love bunnies!  And the Teddy was a creation from one of my best friend who is a Teddy Bear Artist, so now Sebastian is a quilt star!  The quilting on all of these little quilts is done free motion in script to write a story to the child… they are such treasures!

New & Exciting Updates!

Stump Work Bugs!

Stump Work Bugs!

IMG_5420IMG_5422

I have definitely been too busy these last few months. I am trying to get a little caught up & keep my teaching schedule posted on my blog. Hopefully that will work! Two weeks ago I was teaching at Quilting in Toccoa in the Toccoa GA. mountains. The weather was beautiful & the trees were in full color… I love this time of year & so wish it would last much longer. Came home & the temp dropped like a rock! Straight into January I think…. dang it got cold…

Ok, technology kills me sometimes… I wish all this was easier for me to figure out. I hope this all gets posted correctly!

I am also still teaching a BOM or three at Judy Lea’s Quilt Studio in Concord, NC. The Crazy Quilt BOM this past week was really fun! We were making stitched bugs, yes bugs! In ancient times some Stump Work was done by stitching over real bug shells… well I was not going out looking for dead bugs for my class of 8… not happening ladies! So as I was eating some Pistachios one night I got to thinking… ummm these could be bug shells. So we stitched over nut shells to create the raised effect for the stitchery we were making. I think they all got a kick out of the experience! It was fun!  Opps, I just noticed the pic of the little bees need some antennas!

For 2015 BOM I will be doing a sort of mixed media type of project… It has been so much fun to work on!  There will be a banner type or Prayer flag piece for one of the projects.  I am also working on a small fabric book for another & of course a little wall piece using scrim & pre-quilted background for a rather ragged finish!  Don’t panic, the pre-quilting is done by me, not the pre-quilted stuff you buy.  It’s going to be really fun to embellish!

Fun Weekend Welcoming Baby Boy Coming Soon!

Dr. Suess Cake!

Dr. Suess Cake!

Last weekend I went to a baby shower for Samantha & Brandon for their little baby boy!  He is due sometime in early to mid March!  They got so many beautiful gifts!  Her friend Shannon & her mom gave the shower.  There was a very yummy cake trimmed in all the Dr. Suess characters, “pond water” punch with little rubber duckies, and a baby carriage fruit boat!  It was all too cute!

I made them a Story Book Quilt since Samantha is a Media Specialist (Librarian).  She asked for books instead of cards, which was such a cute idea.  The quilt I made was about the animals in their back yard.  She names all the animals in a natural wildlife area behind their house.  I kinda waited to the last minute to stitch the story, because I was debating on whether to change the story or not… they moved to a new house!  Yikes!  What to do, what to do… well their new house is also next to the “big woods” so I used the little story I had already written.  It was really fun to make!  She will just have to name the new animals the same as at the old house….  kids…

One of my friends made her a cute little baby sock monkey!  He is adorable!

Now that I have made this quilt, I will be making more Story Book Quilts!  I have already started on the second one.  These quilts are all based on a theme from the large applique in the corner of the quilt, with all the free-motion quilting being the story.  It will be offered as a two or three part class to explore all the techniques to be featured.  It seems there is never enough time in classes for the quilting.  This class will also be teaching a rick rack binding technique for a little extra fun on the edge.  The quilt is simple, so hopefully it will interest some of the modern quilters.  The one I made for the baby I used Marcia Derse fabrics.  I love her fabrics!  They are similar to batiks, but not printed on Pima cotton, so they are softer for the baby.

Stay tuned for more info on this new class!
